Happy 4th Birthday DJPEPE
DJPEPE, the blockchain spawn of Bitcoin and XCP was born on October 13, 2016. The legendary DJPEPE was born in a litter of 169 identical tiny turntablist tadpoles. The young amphibians would quickly grow up to be alpha, sideways hat wearing frogs modeled after the legendary DJ Q-Bert himself.
Some people didn't realize how special DJPEPE was at first. (Including his creator.) After all, he was just 1 of 4 others in "The 4 Elements Of Hip-Hop Series." The batch of 4 also included MCPEPE, BBOYPEPE & the graffiiti legend PEPEONE, they were all born within Series 4 of the culture-shifting Rare Pepe Trading Card Game.
The first couple of months were spent getting to know the ins and outs of how to navigate the block(chain.) Then, with his manager J-Scrilla's help, DJPEPE got plugged in with the Godfather of Rare Digitable Collectibles, Joe Looney, and together they formulated a way to have DJPEPE manage his own private playlist, which would only be accessible through the Rarepepewallet. DJPEPE was to become the Kool Herc of Bitcoin and all blockchains.
By owning a DJPEPE card, you were able to click on the digital card and "BONUS" text would appear. It would take you to a private soundcloud page of exclusive tunes by DJ J-Scrilla and some of his degenerate pals.
DJPEPE still gets sporadic uploads but the wallet is used sparingly these days. There's occasionally some kinks in accessing the playlist and some days are better than others for tuning in. The Rarepepewallet isn't as used or as maintained as it once was. Joe, the creator of the wallet, obviously thinks maintaining a frog wallet is less important than spending time with his kids and wife. Weird flex bro.
The point is, we've come a long way since then and now most of the AudioNFT market that started on Bitcoin/XCP resides on Ethereum and to a lesser degree Wax, Flow and others vying for their place in the expanding market. Now you can mint unlockables on rarible.com or you can start a digital record store and sell collectible music on mintbase.io like DAORecords does. These days you can use a number of platforms and more pop up everyday it seems. I won't get into what each does, but there's a number of ways people are looking at what's currently being referred to as AudioNFTs. I expect major tings to gwan in the future.
I've recently begun minting exclusive Audio/Visual NFTs on Superrare and using Rarible to release unlockable digitable prints that present the owner with a message about how to obtain the audio.
On the rapidly growing Superrare I just dropped "LSB" which is my favorite AudioNFT I've done thus far. It features a brand new, exclusive melody paired with dirty boom bappish drums all whilst my surrealist cartoon doodles come alive to the rhythm of the funky beat. Hallucinogenics and Bitcoin are the theme and hence the title.
On Rarible.io I have been uploading my Sound Money album artwork and giving away the Bitcoin-centric album with each purchase by using the Unlockable Content feature. Only 21 will ever exist and I upload a new one for .25 ETH each time one sells, that way there's no redeemable album confusion. The marketing of it feels like an extended new type of promotional push as I released this project in April and I keep finding new legs for it. In the day of fast-food albums, I hope some folks appreciate the grind of pushing a niche hip-hop instrumental project for over six months about Bitcoin that happens to feature 4 of the coldest rappers spitting today.
DJPEPE's physical self won't be celebrating his fourth birthday but he went out on top, playing his last gig in San Francisco in the Summer of 2019 at the Edward Snowden headlined- Bitcoin Magazine Conference, and taking pictures with Bitcoiners from all over the world. My then- fiancee (now wife) and I threw him in a dumpster at the end of the event because he became a liability on the plane for flirting too aggressively with the flight attendants. But, luckily he still lives on through the power of the blockchain.
"DJPEPE is simply irresistible" - Crypto Wendy
DJPEPE has passed the torch though, he's stuck in Bitcoin blocks from 4 years ago and now we are blessed with new headlining AudioNFT works. Grammy winning artist RAC is the most notable entry to the space, who recently has been selling mixtapes for over $250 each and just sold a collab with an artist for 70 ETH ($26k) as an AudioNFT on SuperRare. DJ festival favorite, DJ 3LAU, and the almighty Theo Goodman who showed me how to put private keys on cassette tapes and vinyl are also releasing audioNFTs on SR. It's time to start paying attention to audio and mixed media NFTs.
Go get to collecting these new groundbreaking pieces.
